Camping Adventures at Wisconsin’s Governor Dodge State Park

Who leaves out vitamins in a Ziplock bag while camping?

Me.

Oops.

We went camping at Governor Dodge State Park in Wisconsin over Father’s Day weekend. It was my first time there. My sister, who’s family camps a lot recommended it. We had tent camped with them a couple years ago, but this time I was able to share her new camper while my boys and husband shared a tent. That was splendid.

We were excited to hike to a waterfall she had mentioned is cool to see. It was very cool. We walked along the stream back a different way we came, and then later walked down to swim in the lake. Well, my boys went swimming and I went in up to my knees. It was squishy, but refreshing.

I didn’t think I needed to put the trash and food in the truck during the day… but I learned… yes, yes you do.

Got it.

Wasn’t expecting that.
When I came back to start helping my sister start a fire for dinner, I noticed the trash was torn open. I un-zippered the screened in area we placed over the picnic table at our campsite, and took a closer look.

I had tied a plastic Target bag shut, forgetting squirrels and chipmunks, and who knows what else, are not small children. Wildlife do not get that a tied bag means: don’t touch, not for you, move on. Bits of leftovers were on the ground and a nectarine that I had enjoyed that morning was eaten past the pit. Whatever it was cleaned that thing off good. Guess we shared it.

Next I saw my vitamin container under the picnic table. You know the kind with the Sunday-Saturday labeled slots to put each day’s daily dose of whatever does your body good? Mine’s rainbow colored. Yes, I have one now for AM and PM. None of my vitamins were gone however. Decent.

The container was kinda dirty. Gross. I wiped it off and put it on the picnic table. I had put a vintage, yellow, vinyl tablecloth on it that was my grandma’s. I thought it looked cheery. Sometimes we use it for arts and crafts at home. By now there were ants crawling on it. It was a little moment I noticed this is exactly how it should be. Either way, I brushed the ants off. See ya!

Then I noticed the plastic baggies. Two of them. There were holes and nothing inside. I had placed each of my kiddo’s vitamins inside before we left home. But now the gummies were all gone!

Whatever it was left the generic Flintstone vitamins, but they were not inside the bag. I held them in my hand. These are like the ones I used to sit on the counter in the morning and take as a little kid with my mom. One of the vitamins looked “tried,” and must have been spit out. Figures. I reached for the hand sanitizer.

Somewhere, a rodent is experiencing a different kinda day I thought. Hope it was worth it.

All in all, besides for some rain we had on the morning we were packing up to leave, it was very gritty, but pretty great.

Like I always say…. “Make it an adventure!” join annie’s adventure

  1. I would call this a “remember when” adventure to be retold years down the road. What a beautiful site, critters and all.

    1. Thank you! Indeed. I love imagining what happened and it makes me laugh. The best. Thanks for reading.
