Voices Europe Tour Choir Journal Day 10 & 11: Salzburg, Austria 1998

DAY 10
Saturday, April 11, 19988 (7:10pm) Room 210 with Anne

SALZBURG, AUSTRIA: GASTHOF GRUENER WALD

We’re getting ready to go out for the night. We have a concert and a dance after. I’ll write about that when we get home. I just did Patty’s hair! She likes it! Today we went to Salzburg and shopped for 3 hours. First though, we went to the place where Silent Night was made. After Beth and I shopped and we went on a tour with a man named Joseph. We saw the fountain in “Sound of Music” and the stairs where they sang “Do Re Me.” We saw Saint Peters Cemetery where in the movie they hid from the Germans.

The garden was so beautiful and this plant is from one of the cut bushes. (*dried plant no longer in my journal) This place is called Mirabell and it means “beautiful view.” It is so green and the Alps have amazed me all day. Our hotel is odd but I think Authentic. We also saw Mozart’s birthplace and his first piano and violin. He really amazes me too. Salzburg is known for salt mines and we will go there tomorrow. Later! I’m wearing my sister Jenny’s dress. Tomorrow’s Easter!

Here are postcards and photos from this day. The first is from the place Silent Night was written!

DAY 11
Sunday, April 12th, 1998 (6:00am)

SALZBURG, AUSTRIA: GASTHOF GRUENER WALD

We had to get up at 5:30am today! We got home at 12:30am after our mass we sang at. There was no dancing but they had a reception with bread and something hot to drink. We enjoyed hardboiled eggs decorated for Easter. The mass was three hours long and I almost fell asleep. The incense was really strong. The children in the mass were so much more involved than I’ve seen before. The moon last night was so pretty and it shined in through the church which was really pretty dark in the beginning. I need to finish getting ready and go eat before mass and the salt mine tour. Tired. Hungry. Our trip is almost over!

(Sunday Afternoon)

Today we went to the salt mines and had fun changing into baggy over clothes. We felt like the Seven Dwarfs. We went down a hill underground and slid down a slide. It was fun and I tried not to scream. We went on a raft to which reminded me of Phantom of the Opera. The water tasted so salty. It rained all day and we sang to stay happy. We had ice cream for dinner and sang Nico “Happy Birthday.” He’s 41 today. We all rested up in our rooms and are beginning to pack up for home. I can’t believe how fast it has gone.

Here’s a couple postcards from this day:
